about repine
history
repine.net was originally registered by me in November of 2001. It was originally made to play host to various projects, while simultaneously being a place to practice and improve upon my graphic and web design skills.
Repine, meaning "to feel or express discontent," was primarily a community blog. It was a place where various people I had met, both online and offline, were allowed write about, well, anything they wanted - with a few restrictions to protect myself and the site from legal issues, of course. It also played host to my own private online journal - the address to which I gave to very few people. Through that journal, I had a place to write down my own random thoughts like you would in a regular journal. Why didn't I just use a regular journal, you ask? For some reason, my personal private thoughts and paper didn't seem to get along very well - I spent a lot more time on the computer, anyways. At the same time, that journal allowed me to practice some text/css only web design - utilizing no graphic images in the layout.
I also had two other sections devoted to art. One section, titled "Mind's Eye," was devoted to my own graphic design, as well as one of my friends' graphic design and paper illustrations. "Catharsis," the other section, was devoted solely to my brother's graphic design, as well as his poetry and prose writings.
Lastly, repine.net played host to many other personal websites, as well as one web clique. The personal websites were just that - personal websites created by others. They often contained a blog, information about the person and links to other websites. Many of these people would find a personal domain they liked and usually had shared interests with (such as my own) and would ask the domain owner to host their personal website. This often allowed them more space than sites such as Geocities, no ads, more freedom to do what they wished with their website and was often times free.
As mentioned above, one of the sites that repine.net hosted was a web clique. "Xpression" was the only web clique to ever be hosted by repine. In short, Xpression was a place where membership granted your name and website to be listed on their webpage so that others could easily find sites with the same interest. Xpression was a clique designed for websites that promote the freedom of expression, which happened to be at the core of repine's main purpose. This shared core idea between the two sites resulted in repine being the first member of the clique, as well as a great website for the clique to be hosted at. It is the only clique that approached me for hosting that promoted any of the same things repine did, which is why it was the only clique I ever granted hosting to.
After a couple years, interest in repine started dying off - both from myself, as well as the other people that helped support it with their participation. I got somewhat burnt out on web design, which resulted in a loss of interest in managing the site. As a result, repine's hosting was eventually cancelled to keep from wasting money on a dead site.
Now, after four years and two registrar changes, repine is back. I missed it and, through talking with others, I know I'm not the only one. However, the only direction for the site at this moment is to re-establish a basic blog and a place to practice my web design skills. I am unsure if I will re-establish the community blog aspect and would need to learn my way around other CMS/blog program(s) in order to do so anyways. Potential hostees are more than welcome to contact me about hosting space, as well.
